Knights Templar Educational Foundation

"...Freedom can only exist in an Educated Society..."

How The Foundation Began

In 1922, the Grand Encampment launched the Knights Templar Educational Foundation with these words: " We feel the Grand Encampment can build no greater monument than to put into effect a plan which will provide educational advantages for the youth of our beloved Country, thereby enabling them to become more useful members of society and better citizens of this Republic."

The Foundation was sustained and perpetuated by each Sir Knight paying annually the sum of $1.00 for a period of nine years beginning July 1, 1924.  Half of the assessment was placed in the Fund for direct investment and the other half was made immediately available for student loans by allocation to the individual Divisions on the basis of their original capitalization-the 1922 membership.

How It Operates

The Educational Foundation is a Trust Fund administered by the Committee on the Educational Foundation of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar.  The national Committee supervises the loan activity among the 50 Divisions (Grand or subordinate Commanderies) which administer the funds and process loan applications.  By regulation, the Grand Recorder of the Grand Commandery is the Division's Secretary-Treasurer.

The Foundation, recognizing the need for education is essential, provides financial assistance for vocational, technical or professional training and for undergraduate (last two years) and post-graduate study in accordance with the policies conforming to the Regulations and Standard Practice of the Foundation.

Loans--Rates--Repayment

Maximum Loans are:

  1. $2,500.00 for one scholastic year
  2. $2,500.00 per year when two years are required
  3. maximum of $5,000.00 to any one student.

The Interest Rate is set at 5%, and charges start at the date of graduation or withdrawal from the educational institution being attended.

Loans are payable beginning six months following graduation.  Payments are spread over approximately 48 months depending on the rapidity and regularity of payments.

Applications

Applications are accepted under the following conditions:

  1. Applicant must have a permanent Indiana home address.
  2. Applicant must have satisfactorily completed the first two years of undergraduate study or be engaged in post-graduate work.
  3. Applicant must have a person (parent or guardian, preferably) who has sufficient net worth and income to be able to guarantee payment of the loan in the event that the student cannot.

PLEASE NOTE..... The deadline for accepting applications for the Fall Term is June 15th of that year. Due to processing time, no applications are normally taken after that date.  If an applicant has missed the date for the current year but feels that they wish to apply for the following year, they should contact the office of the Foundation in January of the following year.

The Record

After more than a half century, the Knights Templar Educational Foundation has assisted more than 80,000 students in an aggregate monetary value of more than $40,000,000.00.  The capitalization of the Foundation is more than $8,600,000.00, and at least 75% of these monies are invested in deserving youth, thereby exemplifying the purpose and principles for which it was created.

The Masonic Order of Knights Templar

The Masonic Order of Knights Templar which sponsors the Foundation, is a part of the family of Freemasonry, a fraternity that has an organized existence of more than 400 years.  The Knights Templar take their identity from those Christian Knights organized in 1188, whose deeds of charity and pure beneficence spread their reputation through the centuries.  Today, those deeds extend to not only the Educational Foundation but to many other humanitarian endeavors.
